The 54th round of the Geneva International Discussions (GID), which aims to address the consequences of the 2008 conflict in Georgia, took place on October 12-13. After the completion of GID, both sides of the conflict responded and assessed the negotiations.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Russian side proposed to start the process of delimitation of the “border” between Georgia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, with their further demarcation. In addition, the Russian MFA stressed that in order to ensure security in South Caucasus, Georgian needs to sign agreements with the occupied territories. “The urgency of this task is growing amid the West’s active efforts to bring Tbilisi into NATO, as evidenced by regular military exercises directly on Georgian territory, including the Alliance’s recent multinational maneuver – “Agile Spirit – 2021″”, – reads the Russian MFA statement.

In response to the Russian MFA, the Georgian Foreign Ministry stressed that Moscow’s illegal statements on the so-called delimitation-demarcation of the occupation line are completely unacceptable. “The only solution to the issue can be de-occupation of Georgian territories”, – noted Georgian MFA in its statement.

As Georgian MFA informs, the main issues of discussions were the release of illegally detained Georgian citizens, de facto annexation of the occupied territories and humanitarian problems of the local population.

According to the Georgian Foreign Ministry, during the talks, the Georgian side pointed out the need for the EUMM to enter the Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions and to operate throughout Georgia in accordance with its mandate.
